Educational Background I earned a B.F.A degree in Speech Communications from Southwest Texas State University, where I was a member of the Elton Abernathy Forensic Society and the LBJ Debate Society. I was also a member of Pi Kappa Delta, the National Forensic Honor Society.
I competed in collegiate speech and debate events for four years, where I won numerous awards in Texas Intercollegiate Forensic Association (TIFA) competitions. I also competed throughout Texas and the nation at numerous invitational tournaments and at national tournaments, including the Johnson County Community College Junior Varsity National tournament (1993), the Pi Kappa Delta National tournament (1995) and Cross-Examination Debate Association (CEDA) Nationals in 1994, 1995 and 1996.
Professional Honors and Activities I was honored at the Conference on Texas Excellence in Education by the Texas Exes Awards for Outstanding Teachers as a ‘Rising Star’ in Education in 2000.
I have also written proposal papers (1998 & 1999) for the National Federal of High School Association’s policy debate topic selection process. I went on to serve for three years on the NFHSA Policy Debate Wording Committee (2000-2003); I was selected to chair the Committee’s 2003 meeting in Denver, Colorado.
I have also served the University Interscholastic League (UIL) as a member of the Extemporaneous Speaking Advisory Committee (2003), as a member of the Lincoln Douglas Advisory Committee (2013), as the Conference 3A State Cross-Examination Debate Assistant Tournament Director (2001-2006), and as a Regional Advisory Committee member (1998-2017).
I was honored to receive the National speech and debate association Single diamond key award in 2003 and the nsda Double Diamond Key Award in 2013. The Diamond awards recognize outstanding work by speech and debate coaches in furthering the accomplishments of their students.
Teaching Background i am in my 20th year of teaching Communications and Debate at the high school level, and my twelth year at Dripping Springs High School. I previously taught at Westlake High School in Austin and Calallen High School in Corpus Christi.
i have also taught Communication Applications, Professional Communications, Public Speaking, Oral Interpretation, Debate I – Debate IV, and English I.
i also coach the Dripping Springs High School Speech and Debate team. During my 20 years, i have coached students to state championships in Public Speaking, congressional debate and lincoln douglas debate in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and the Texas Forensic Association (TFA). i have also coached students to the final rounds in Oral Interpretation at the UIL State tournament. i have also had students place as finalists in Congressional debate at the tournament of champions, the Texas Forensic Association State tournament and the National Speech and Debate Association’s (previously known as the National Forensic League)National tournament. My debaters have earned awards throughout the state and the nation, including UIL State QUarter-finalists in Cross-Examination Debate , a UIL STate bronze medalist in Persuasive Speaking and Lincoln Douglas Debate, a UIL state Champion in Persuasive Speaking and Lincoln Douglas Debate, and a state champion in Congressional Debate at the UIL State tournament, a state champion in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking at the Texas Forensic Association’s State tournament, 2nd place at the Harvard university tournament of champions qualifying tournament in Lincoln Douglas Debate, 1st place in Lincoln Douglas Debate at both the Greenhill Classic and the St. Marks School of Texas Tournament of Champions qualifiers, 3rd place in Extemporaneous Debate at the National Speech and Debate Association’s National tournament and 12th place in Congressional Debate at the Tournament of Champions National tournament.
